In 2015 Dr. Thompson graduated from University of Western States with a Masters Degree in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine. This degree is very complimentary to the Doctor of Chiropractic degree. Functional Medicine is a branch of natural medicine that focuses heavily on key imbalances in the body and restores balance by prescribing targeted nutrient therapy, removing disease-causing triggers, and giving appropriate dietary and lifestyle recommendations. A comprehensive functional medicine plan focuses on many common factors that contribute to chronic illness. Some examples of these factors include low-grade cellular inflammation, toxicity, dysbiosis of the gut, increased intestinal permeability, immune imbalances, hormone imbalances and more.

As we learn more about the human body and chronic illness it is becoming more apparent that disease is multi-causal. Science is beginning to understand that the main underlying factors of disease are genetics, diet/nutrition/lifestyle, and stress/trauma. Typically for an individual to express a specific disease there must first be a genetic predisposition for the particular illness. Then there must be certain dietary, nutritional, and lifestyle factors in place to react with the genetics. The final factor that usually brings the disease into expression is exposure to stressors or traumatic stimulus.

Some examples of common diseases or illnesses that fall into this category are type II diabetes, low thyroid, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, depression, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, infertility, obesity, etc. These symptoms can range from weight gain, digestive complaints, exhaustion, and insomnia to joint pain, muscle pain, mood changes, and excessive thirst or hunger. These and many other symptoms can be hard to recognize and can often be considered by many to simply be a part of the normal aging process. Vitality Chiropractic specializes in identifying the underlying causes of disease and implementing various methods and therapies to balance the body on a cellular level. A body in balance, free from interference, deficiency, and toxicity is able to regenerate, repair, and heal.
